The Scabs are a Flemish garage rock and punk band. The group comes from Diest and played together from 1979 to 1996. After 2007, she performed in reunion appearances in irregular order.
Band history
The original line-up of the Scabs came together in 1979. It consisted of the singer and guitarist Guy Swinnen, the guitarist Berre Bergen, the bassist Francis Vangeel and the drummer Frankie Saenen. The group was heavily influenced by British punk of the late 1970s ; in the early 1980s they were sometimes referred to as the Belgian answer to British punk band The Clash . The first single So Called Friends was released in 1981. After two more self-produced singles, the group signed a record deal with EMI . After the mini-LP Here's to You Gang! and the less successful album debut album F or All the Wolf Calls EMI separated from the band.
The subsequent dry spell was only ended after a few changes of line-up and a change to a new label. Fons Sijmons joined the group in 1984 as the new bass player. Guitarist Willy Lambregt (stage name: Willy Willy) introduced a new way of playing, more strongly oriented towards garage rock bands and the style of the early Rolling Stones , in 1986 . After Lambregt, who with the singer Dani Klein already in the formation Arbeid Adelt! had worked together, had briefly switched to the pop band Vaya Con Dios , he returned to the Scabs in 1990. In 1987 the group came under contract with the Belgian independent label Play It Again Sam . The band had their peak of success with the two albums Royalty in Exile (1990) and Jumping the Tracks (1991). After 1993 the band fell into a commercial doldrums again. In 1994 Willy Lambregt left the group after internal disputes. The new guitarist was Tjenne Berghmans, who had previously played with the Betty Goes Green and Clouseau formations .
By 1995 the group had released three more albums and a live CD. In 1996 The Scabs broke up. On the occasion of the band's 25th birthday, they gave three reunion concerts in 2007, including at the Ancienne Belgique in Brussels . Further concert and festival appearances followed in 2008 and 2009 - including at the TW Classic Festival and the Suikerrock Festival .
Surname
The band's name comes from the English term "Scab", which is colloquially a synonym for "Strikebreaker". The name comes from Guy Swinnen, who chose this after seeing a BBC report on a miners' strike in England . The literal meaning of scab is: scab (on a wound).
