Swissmem

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Swissmem is the association of the Swiss machine, electrical and metal industry (MEM industry) and related technology-oriented industries and comprises around 1,050 member companies. The MEM industry generates 7.4 percent (2016) of the gross domestic product and thus plays a key role in the Swiss economy. With around 320,000 employees, including 20,000 apprentices, it is Switzerland's largest industrial employer. With exports worth 63.2 billion Swiss francs, the industry accounts for almost a third of all goods exports.

history

The association emerged from the two associations of the Swiss Machine Industry Employers' Association (ASM) and the Swiss Machine Industry Association (VSM). The two associations have been operating under the common name Swissmem since 1999. At the beginning of 2007, the VSM was renamed Swissmem and took over all of the ASM's activities, except those related to the industry's collective labor agreement.

Swissmem is close to the FDP and negotiates collective labor agreements.

The association represents the interests of the MEM industry vis-à-vis politics, national and international organizations, employee representatives and the public and acts as a service center for its members. As an employer representative, Swissmem negotiates the provisions of the collective labor agreement (GAV) for the MEM industry with the unions. The GAV of the MEM industry is traditionally pioneering for numerous GAV in Switzerland and has developed to today's high level since the "Peace Agreement" agreed in 1937.

organization

The association has been chaired by Hans Hess since November 2010 . From 1999 until his election to the Federal Council , Johann Schneider-Ammann was President of Swissmem. In the past it has happened several times that important functionaries of Swissmem or ASM or VSM have risen to even more influential positions in the Swiss Employers' Association ( Peter Hasler , Thomas Daum ).

Stefan Brupbacher has been the director since 2019 .
