Stefan Brupbacher (born November 18, 1967 in Zurich ) is a Swiss association official and politician ( FDP ). He has been director of the Swiss machine, electrical and metal industry association Swissmem since 2019 .

Study and job

Brupbacher studied law at the University of Zurich ( lic. Iur. 1992) and received his doctorate there in 2002 summa cum laude . In 2003, he received the Professor Walther Hug Prize for the promotion of legal research for his dissertation . He obtained his master's degree in international relations and economics ( MA , 1996) and international business law (MBL, 2002) at Johns Hopkins University , Bologna and Washington , and at the University of St. Gallen .

Before completing his doctorate , he was research assistant to his doctoral supervisor Manfred Rehbinder in Zurich (1991–1994) and deputy head of the “International Labor Issues” department of the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) in Bern and at the same time representative of Switzerland at the International Labor Organization (ILO) of the UN in Geneva (1996-2002).

Brupbacher worked for the parliamentary services of the Swiss Federal Assembly in Bern from 2002–2004 as secretary of economic commissions and from 2004–2005 as advisor for the presidency of Daniel Vasella at the international pharmaceuticals association IFPMA. 2005–2008 he was Issue Manager for health, education and research policy at the Economiesuisse business association in Zurich.

Brupbacher chaired the health commission of the FDP of the canton of Zurich and participated in the development of new strategies for the Swiss FDP.

In 2007, Stefan Brupbacher became general secretary of the Free Democratic Party of Switzerland. From the foundation of the FDP. Liberal Switzerland in 2009, Bupbacher served as the new party's first general secretary for five years. In mid-2014, Federal Councilor Johann Schneider-Ammann appointed him Secretary General of the Federal Department of Economics, Education and Research (EAER). After his election as director of Swissmem, Brupbacher passed on internal information from the Foreign Policy Commission (AKP) to Swissmem by email, which was controversial.

On January 1, 2019, Stefan Brupbacher was appointed Director of Swissmem. Swissmem is the association of the machine, electrical and metal industry and represents 1,150 member companies with 320,000 employees. As one of the most important industry associations, Swissmem is strongly committed to open markets thanks to free trade agreements and a framework agreement with the EU , a liberal labor market and an education and research policy adapted to the challenges of digitization.

Stefan Brupbacher is married and lives in Zurich.
