Content Online Directory & Travel Guide to Traditional Farm Animal Breeds & Crops

Arca-Net is a pan-European database for keeping traditional farm animal breeds and cultivated plants and making them available to the public. The database can be viewed by anyone on the Internet free of charge. Information about the facility, access and offers, but also information about the respective livestock breeds, their distribution, endangerment and history can be called up in the Arca-Net.

background

Rare and / or endangered domestic animal breeds as well as old cultivated plants have largely disappeared from agricultural production operations, some live on in arche farms, variety gardens, animal parks, open-air museums and other institutions. Arca-Net makes these facilities known to a wide audience and encourages them to visit them. In addition, Arca-Net offers background information and raises awareness of the topic of preserving agrobiodiversity .

As part of surveys on rescue and conservation stations for rare and endangered livestock breeds in Europe, the SAVE Foundation set up the Arca-Net information portal. Over 570 institutions in 46 European countries (end of 2010) are listed in the Arca-Net. All of these institutions offer visitors access to their farm animals and crops.

construction

The user is introduced to the facility, details for a visit are described, how to get there is explained and a description of the breed of many farm animals is also given. Updates and new entries are made via password-protected user accounts of the individual institutions. The search function can be used to search specifically for animal species, plant categories, countries and products. The search results can be displayed either as a list or on a map. By selecting a facility, further information such as address, description, opening times, animals and plants, products offered, etc. are displayed.

Guidelines for inclusion

As an Internet portal, the inclusion of a facility is subject to clear guidelines, such as: B. Pure breeding with herd bookkeeping, plant collections of regional importance.

basic requirements

The facility must (mandatory)

  • Provide public access to a collection or permanent exhibition of rare animal breeds or plant varieties (access may only be possible upon registration).
  • Operate pure breeding with participation in conservation breeding programs, if possible keep herd book keeping of the animals, species-appropriate keeping.

The facility should (optional)

  • Be recognized by a national organization (e.g. Arche-Hof, Arboretum) or city farm, open-air museum, eco-museum, nature park center (member of professional association!).
  • Document the differentiation of the races and varieties by showing the essential characteristics (inscription with boards or labels; or with numbers on an additional flyer).
  • Possibly also be a processing plant on a traditional basis (processing point), provided that it primarily serves to market traditional breeds and varieties.

Plant area

  • It has to be a collection of at least regional importance
  • or a significant cross-section of a species

Animal area

  • Breeding groups of at least three animal species from two size classes (including father animals),
  • or significant breeding station / stud of only one breed if this comprises a significant proportion of the breeding population,
  • or a significant cross-section of a species (e.g. donkey center with national breeds).

Processing plant

  • Publicly accessible processing plant (e.g. wool processing, mill), which shows the processing as a whole and in the form of traditional craftsmanship.
