The Archaeological Open-Air Museum Funkenburg - the reconstruction of a Germanic fortified settlement, which is unique in Germany - is located on a flat mountain spur that slopes steeply on three sides on the outskirts of West Greussia . Scheduled excavations were carried out from 1974 to 1980 on the Germanic fortified settlement.
The Funkenburg was between 200 BC. Settled in BC and AD 50. The fortified settlement was fortified with palisades, ramparts (fore and main ramparts) and ditches to the northwest.
Excavations
During the archaeological investigations on site, 60 huts and around 500 pits were identified. The largest building had a footprint of 8 mx 14 m and was probably the seat of the head of the fortified settlement. The finds, especially the ceramics, point to an immigration from East Germany. Relationships with the Celts and Romans could also be shown on the basis of the finds.
reconstruction
After the excavation, only the reconstructed moat between the outer and main castle was preserved. After work, the local group initially reconstructed the defense tower using simple means, at least the perimeter of the main building was marked with posts and at the same time the complete reconstruction of the defense system was suggested.
From 1992 to 1999, the fortifications of the outer and main castle were then partially reconstructed at the original location from ramparts, ditches, towers and palisades. The concept for the "reconstruction" of the Funkenburg was developed by the local association Funkenburg Westgreußen, which received scientific advice from the Museum of Prehistory and Early History of Thuringia .
While the outer bailey is used for museum operations, a representative “selection of modeled living and working houses, storage buildings, ovens and tools” was created in the main bailey.
Events
The castle and its surroundings are ideally suited for depicting Iron Age cultural groups, which is why they became a center for experimental archeology in Thuringia in addition to the pottery workshop near Haarhausen since the early 1990s . At the events, the members of the association recreate the Iron Age way of life and work in appropriate clothing. Activities such as pottery, baking, spinning, dyeing, weaving, knotting nets or archery are offered as part of active programs.
