The Archaeological Museum in the BMW plant in Regensburg is a small archaeological museum on the premises of the BMW plant in the Harting district of Regensburg .

Digs

The area for the new construction of the planned BMW plant in the municipality of Harting was known as an archaeological site. Finds have been recovered and documented there since 1903 . Extensive excavations were carried out on a neighboring new development area between 1979 and 1981 , and the entire area was prospected in 1981 from an aerial archaeological perspective . In order to save the expected ground monuments from final destruction, extensive planned excavations were carried out between 1983 and 1985. The excavation work was carried out by Jens Lüning and Gudrun Malcher from the Institute for Prehistory and Early History at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt and unearthed more than 10,000 objects and around 50 house floor plans. The rich spectrum of finds extends from the Upper Palaeolithic to the beginning of the 9th century . Particularly noteworthy is the discovery of two wells from a former Roman estate from the middle of the 3rd century . Numerous skeletal remains of 14 men, women and children were recovered from the backfilling of the well, showing traces of considerable violence. This points to an attack and subsequent slaughter of the Roman residents at that time by presumably Alemannic attackers.

museum

In December 1986, the museum was opened with a small open-air facility on the factory premises. The museum showed a selection of around 300 of the most important objects on loan from the Historisches Museum Regensburg . The exhibition was supplemented by numerous models and display boards. The remains of the foundations of the Roman estate, which have been moved to the current position, form the open-air facility. The conception and scientific supervision of the museum was carried out by Sabine Rieckhoff-Pauli . In the meantime, the exhibition has been reduced to a few showcases and the loans have been returned to the Regensburg Historical Museum.
