Archerfield Airport ( ICAO : YBAF) is a smaller airport located approximately 12 km southwest of Brisbane , Queensland , Australia .
history
Captain Lester Brain, flight instructor at Qantas Airways , landed in his De Havilland DH.61 iant Moth in 1927 on the site of what would later become the airfield to check its suitability as an airfield. As a result of a public survey in 1929, part of the area was designated for trade and commerce with hazardous substances. In order to separate it from the surrounding residential areas and farms, this part was given the name Archerfield.
In 1930 hangars were built and Qantas moved its base from Eagle Farm to Archerfield. Also Ansett Australia and Trans Australia Airlines used the space in the 1930s. The Royal Queensland Aero Club also moved from Eagle Farm to Archerfield in 1931.
The tower and many of the buildings were built during the period when Archerfield was the main airfield in Brisbane.
Military use
During World War II , Archerfield was the base of the Royal Australian Air Force , United States Army Air Forces (USAAF), Royal Netherlands Air Force and the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm . The Air Force Base RAAF Station Archerfield existed until 1956.
Post-war years
After the war, Ansett Australia and Trans Australia Airlines relocated to Eagle Farm Airport . The equipment allowed it to be used as an alternative place and for general aviation.
