history

The organization was founded in 1953 in Wisconsin , USA under the name Archery Manufacturers and Dealers Association (AMADA) . Among the founding members were the bow makers and archers Fred Bear and Bob Lee, who are recognized in the archery world .

One of the first projects was the standardization of bow and string lengths, from which the AMO standards , which are still widely used today, emerged . The 22 basic standards are now defined in the ATA Technical Guidelines , a guide based on engineering knowledge and practical experience accumulated over around fifty years. It goes back to the times of Earl Hoyt , founder of Hoyt Archery , one of the world's largest bow and equipment companies, Dick Mauch of Bear Archery and Chuck Saunders . Regardless of their business competition, the early entrepreneurs jointly propagated standardized and consistent industry guidelines for dealers and customers.

In the 1960s, the association shortened its name from AMADA to Archery Manufacturer's Organization (AMO) . As a result of the invention of the compound bow , the number of members, mostly from manufacturers, rose sharply in the 1970s. In 1991, under the presidency of Dick Lattimer, the association moved its headquarters to Gainesville (Florida) , USA . With the first event of the AMO Archery Trade Show in 1997, the association's funding, which previously consisted of donations from members, was replaced by the profits from this event.

In 2002 the AMO was reorganized into the Archery Trade Association . The ATA sees itself as a non-profit promoter of growth in archery and bowhunting. It works with various organizations in the archery industry to promote archery.
