Archibald Douglas, 5th Earl of Angus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Archibald Douglas, 5th Earl of Angus , called the Great Earl or Bell the Cat (* approx. 1453 ; † 1514 ) was a Scottish nobleman from the Douglas family and High Chancellor of Scotland.

Life

He was the son of George Douglas, 4th Earl of Angus and Isabella Sibbald. Archibald succeeded his father as the Earl of Angus in 1462.

He received his nicknames "Bell the Cat" and "the Great Earl" because of his courage in the fight against the favoritism of King Jacob III. , namely the capture of Thomas Cochrane, a favorite of the king. He secured a significant increase in wealth and lands for his family. Archibald held the post of High Chancellor of Scotland from 1493 to 1497.

Together with Alexander Stewart, 1st Duke of Albany , he was one of the allies of King Edward IV of England, recognized the English sovereignty over Scotland and opposed James III. as well as Jacob IV.

Archibald took part in the Battle of Flodden Field , in which his two sons died with Elizabeth Boyd. The elder of the two, George, Master of Angus, was the father of his heir Archibald Douglas, 6th Earl of Angus . The younger William is the progenitor of the later Dukes of Hamilton and Brandon as well as William Douglas, 9th Earl of Angus .
