He is the son of Archibald Kennedy, 7th Marquess of Ailsa (1925-1994) and Mary Burn (1916-2007).

In 1979 he married Dawn Leslie Anne Keen. The marriage ended in divorce in 1989. He has two daughters with her:

  • Rosemary Margaret Kennedy (* 1980)
  • Alicia-Jane Lesley Kennedy (* 1981)

When his father died in 1994, he inherited his title, including the associated seat in the House of Lords . He gave his inaugural address in parliament on June 16, 1994. Under the House of Lords Act 1999 , he lost his hereditary seat in parliament.

He was the hereditary clan chief of Clan Kennedy . Since he had no male offspring, his younger brother David inherited all titles.

His title of Marques is named after the island of Ailsa Craig in the Firth of Clyde , which is still owned by the family to this day. This has been advertised for sale since 2011.
