Archion is a paid web portal that puts church records and other prosopographic sources online. A beta version of the portal started on September 13, 2014 at the 66th German Genealogy Day in Kassel . Live operation was activated on March 20, 2015 in the regional church office of the Evangelical Church of Kurhessen-Waldeck in Kassel.

history

The Kirchenbuchportal GmbH , which was founded in May 2013 by the Evangelical Church in Germany and eleven Evangelical regional churches in Stuttgart , ensures the ongoing operation of the portal. The project began in 2005/2006 and is closely linked to the work of the Association of Church Archives . Over 4,000 users were able to take part in the test phase from September 2014. In October 2015 Archion was already managing a data volume of around 200 terabytes (including data mirroring). In 2016, three Protestant regional churches were added as further shareholders.

Since its inception, Archion has developed into an important portal for genealogy, which is also met with great interest abroad.

aims

Archion's primary task is to provide all kinds of prosopographical sources digitally, especially church registers of all denominations. As from 1 January 1876, the registry offices for civil registration in the German Reich were officially in charge, a German family archives created by Archion to which the public archives connect seamlessly. Archion started with a focus on around 200,000 Protestant church registers. At the time of the beta version in September 2014, around 20,000, at the time of the official launch in March 2015, around 40,000 church registers with a volume of around 2.5 million pages had been digitized.
