The dive support ship Arctic Surveyor , built in 1974, was the world's first dive support ship with a dynamic positioning system .

history

The Arctic Surveyor was launched on April 20, 1974 at the Jansen shipyard in Leer in East Frisia. The client was the Norwegian Odd Berg. The ship was handed over on July 27, 1974. It was the world's first ship with a system for dynamic positioning (Kongsberg 503 MK II).

In 1983 the Arctic Surveyor was employed by the Norwegian shipyard Kristiansands Skruefabrik & Mek. Verksted fundamentally overhauled and rebuilt. In 1988 the ship was sold and renamed Eastern Install . Another sale took place in 1992, after which the ship only bore the name Install . In 1992 the ship was sold again and renamed the Balmoral Sea .

On June 20, 2000, the Balmoral Sea caught fire during a shipyard time in New Orleans, where it was initially badly damaged and sunk by an overzealous fire chief during the extinguishing work. The wreck was lifted on July 8, 2000 and then demolished. The valuable diving base system was dismantled before being scrapped and later installed in the Eclipse ( Stena Seaspread ).

technology

The Arctic Surveyor had an extremely extensive machine system. The drive system consisted of the two 1000 hp main engines from Caterpillar, which drove two three-bladed controllable pitch propellers. In addition, two additional Caterpillar auxiliary diesels with 960 hp and a smaller Caterpillar diesel engine with 325 hp were available. In addition, the Arctic Surveyor had three Hedemora diesels with 1840 hp each.

The additional propulsion devices that made dynamic positioning possible in the first place consisted of a Brattvåg bow thruster with 600 hp, a front Brattvåg azimuth thruster with 600 hp , a Brattvåg stern thruster with 600 hp and a rear Brattvåg azimuth thruster with 600 hp .

The main equipment of the ship was a 400-meter split-level diving system for nine people with four chambers and a diving bell supplied by Dräger . The driving crew consisted of 20 seafarers, a total of up to 60 people could work on board.
