Ardingly ( spoken : ɑrdɪŋˌlaɪ, "Arding-lye") is a village ( Village ) and a municipality ( Civil Parish ) in the district of Mid Sussex , West Sussex , England . It is about 53 kilometers south of London and 23 kilometers north of the seaside resort of Brighton . Other major cities nearby are Chichester , Haywards Heath , Crawley and East Grinstead . Ardingly is located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty , an area of outstanding natural beauty known as the High Weald .
Sights in the region include the Ardingly Reservoir , a reservoir that provides fresh water to smaller towns in the region and is also an attraction for water sports enthusiasts, the Royal Botanic Gardens , St. Peter's Church and the Big-Upon-Little rock formation .
Events
The rural tranquility of Ardingly is usually interrupted on Father's Day by the London to Brighton bike race and in June by the Southern England Agricultural Fair . In addition there are a number of smaller events such as antique markets and the Assembly regional scout ( Surrey Scout About ) every three years on the South of England Showground will be held in Ardingly.
education
On the southern edge of the village is Ardingly College , a well-known private school. There is also a state primary school; secondary state schools are located in neighboring Haywards Heath.
Infrastructure
In 1864 a branch line was opened from the Brighton Main Line at Haywards Heath to Horsted Keynes on the East Grinstead - Lewes route with Ardingly as the only intermediate station.
Passenger traffic was shut down on October 28, 1963, but there is still heavy freight traffic from Haywards Heath to a building materials company Hanson in Ardingly. The line towards Horsted Keynes is owned by the private Bluebell Railway , which aims to reopen in the long term.
