Ardwall House

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ardwall House is a villa near the Scottish village of Gatehouse of Fleet in the Council Area Dumfries and Galloway . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

description

Ardwall House was built around 1762 by members of the McCulloch clan . The villa was expanded in the late 19th century. To avoid a stylistic break, the extensions were adapted to the architecture of the mid-18th century. The villa is located approximately 2.5 km southwest of the Gatehouse of Fleet.

The facades of the two-story building, with the exception of the natural stone surrounds made of red sandstone and the rusticated corner stones , are plastered with Harl . The north-facing front is five axes wide. A wide front staircase with wrought iron balusters leads to the central entrance portal. This is designed with a canopy with Doric columns and a frieze . The two-winged portal closes with an ornamented warrior window .

The wings added in the 19th century protrude slightly on both sides. They stretch along the sides and re-emerge at the back of the building, so that Ardwall House has an approximately H-shaped floor plan. Venetian windows are installed on the ground floor ; overhead there are portholes with twelve-part lattice windows . The design of the back of the building largely corresponds to that of the front, but is a bit simpler. The fanned staircase is worked with a stone balustrade and the entrance door closes with a semicircular combat window. The building closes with slate-covered hip roofs .
