The Argentino Canal ( Spanish Canal Argentino or Canal Argentino Brazo Sur , in Chile Canal Lautaro ), also known as Ferguson Channel , is a strait that separates Bryde Island from the west coast of Graham Land in the north of the Antarctic Peninsula . It connects Paradise Harbor with Gerlache Street .
This sea route was first mapped, but not named, during the Belgica expedition (1897–1899) under the direction of the Belgian polar explorer Adrien de Gerlache de Gomery . The name Canal Argentino can be found for the first time on Argentine maps from 1950. The name, which is common in the United Kingdom, is named after the Scottish geologist David Ferguson (1857-1936), who explored the area between 1913 and 1914. Chilean scientists named it after the Lautaro , one of the ships of the 3rd Chilean Antarctic Expedition (1948–1949).
