Argentino Ledesma

Corazón Argentino Ledesma (born June 24, 1928 in Santiago del Estero , † August 6, 2004 in Buenos Aires ) was an Argentine tango musician.

As a tango singer and lyricist, he worked with Héctor Varela and shaped the typical "Varela" style with him. Later he also appeared with other formations, including Carlos Di Sarli and Miguel Caló, and finally worked without any permanent ties to an orchestra.

life and career

After the entrance examination at the State Military Academy in Tucumán , which he had taken at the suggestion of his relatives, failed due to his color blindness, Ledesma remained closely connected to the music from Buenos Aires. A group of friends were able to arrange an interview for Ledesma on the Aconcagua radio station. The broadcaster signed Ledesma for an unexpectedly large sum. His artist name Raúl Ledesma - one of his uncles was called Raùl - was already taken and known in the scene. So Ledesma decided on his middle name.

Ledesma was now very busy: Monday to Friday he sang on the radio accompanied by a guitar group (Mario Menéndez, Navarro, Bernal) and at the weekend he was in the clubs of Tucumàn with various local tango orchestras.

During this time Ledesma also developed his love for football. He became such a good player that he had to choose between tango and football, as the nightly performances in the tango salons on Saturday evening did not mix up with the games on Sunday.

In 1947 he and friends attended a performance by Alberto D'Angelo's tango orchestra from Buenos Aires. With the consent of the maestro, he sang three tangos with the orchestra during the ball (“Mi noche triste (Lita)”, “Siga el corso” and “Y volvemos a querernos”). D'Angelo was impressed by Ledesma's voice and offered to come with him to Buenos Aires. Ledesma refused despite the relatively low income in relation to his success, as he had Tucumán well established in himself.

He later performed with the Joaquín Signorelli Orchestra. When the contract with the radio station ended, he returned to his home province.

In addition to working as an accountant, he appeared here on Radio Del Norte. Saturdays alternate with the local tango orchestras under Luis Napoleón and the Paz brothers.

In the early 1950s, he applied to work as an accountant at an important company in the capital. He was taken and so he moved to Buenos Aires.

On the second day after his arrival, Ledesma got acquainted with the tango scene and attended concerts and balls with the aim of finding a musical home in the capital. He accepted various offers to audition. He immediately got a contract with the radio station Belgrano . Its famous presenter Guillermo Brizuela Méndez was so enthusiastic about his talent that he recommended him to maestro Héctor Varela , who was looking for a replacement for one of the two singers in his formation, Armando Laborde.
