Location of the Argonner barracks in Hesse

The Argonner barracks is a former barracks in the Wolfgang district of the city of Hanau .

history

The Argonner barracks was named after the battle in the Argonnerwald , where German and French troops fought against each other in the First World War . It was built at the same time as the Pioneer barracks in 1938 on a site south of Wolfgang, directly on the railway line. This area previously served as the Hanau High Court , where criminals were executed until 1861; the original facility has been preserved for the entire period of military use until today. The barracks consisted of five blocks that were lined up around a central square. The III. Railway regiment that recruited and trained prospective pioneers in the Argonner barracks.

The Argonner barracks was badly damaged in World War II and then rebuilt by the US Army until 1956. Two different barracks, which were also known as Old Argonner and New Argonner , were created - separated by a public road ; both served mainly as residential complexes for family members of US soldiers who were stationed in Hanau. Old Argonner was located on the site of the historic Wehrmacht barracks and, in addition to residential complexes, also housed the elementary school for primary school students. New Argonner was across the street; Here there was, among other things, a medical center for the medical care of soldiers and their relatives, the middle school and high school for the education of relatives children and a sports center. The extensive military training area Campo Pond bordered directly on New Argonner . At the end of 2008, the US Army cleared the Argonner barracks.

conversion

The conversion took place at different speeds for both barracks. New Argonner was sold to an investor back in 2009. He built the Argonner-Park housing estate for up to 1000 residents by 2011 . A local supply center called Argonner-Markt was built on the site of the former medical center . The private Paul Gerhardt School moved into the Middle School , while the High School was demolished. The former military training area Campo Pond is now an FFH area , a project to release Przewalski horses is taking place here. The sports center in the south was to be renovated according to the original plans and used by the Hanau sports clubs in place of the previous sports center in Hanau-Lamboy , but financial problems prevented the implementation of these plans. Now the sports center is to be demolished and the area used as a residential area, but this is considered problematic, on the one hand because the area is right next to a busy railway line, so that noise protection measures are necessary, and on the other hand because the strictly protected natterjack toad was discovered in the area.

In contrast, Old Argonner stood empty for years. Only the former elementary school was acquired by the city of Hanau in 2009, which opened a new special school here with the Elisabeth Schmitz School a year later , replacing two older schools in the city center and in Großauheim. In 2014 Wolfgang's elementary school , the Robinson School, also moved into the premises of the Elementary School due to a lack of space due to the sharp increase in population in the district; many parents feared attacks on their children by special school students. As a new housing estate, Lehrhöfer Park, the residential complexes will offer space for 800–1000 residents. The first work on this began in 2016 and is currently still in progress.

Monument protection

The Argonner barracks as a whole is a cultural monument according to the Hessian Monument Protection Act .
