Augustin Marre

Augustin Marre (born November 16, 1853 in Goutrens, Aveyron department , † September 7, 1927 in Dijon ) was a French Roman Catholic archbishop , Trappist , abbot and abbot general .

life and work

Auguste Marre joined the Trappist Abbey Désert in 1872 and took the religious name Augustin . In 1876 he went as a novice to resettle the Igny Monastery . Ordained a priest in 1877, he became prior (after solemn profession in 1879) in 1881 and abbot of Igny in 1886. In addition, he sat on the city council of the municipality of Arcis-le-Ponsart, Marne department, since 1881 . From 1900 he was at the same time (under Cardinal Benoît-Marie Langénieux ) auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Reims and titular bishop of Constantia in Arabia . From 1904 to 1922 Marre (after Sébastien Wyart ) was the second Abbot General of the Cistercians of the Stricter Observance (Trappists) and Abbot of the Cîteaux Monastery (with official seat in Rome ). After his resignation he was titular Archbishop of Melitene until his death (during an operation) . His grave is in Cîteaux.
