Argyropelecus is a genus from the deep-sea hatchet family (Sternoptychidae). Five of the seven species are found in the eastern Atlantic, one in the western Pacific and another in all of the world's oceans. They are deep-sea fish that live in the so-called twilight zone. Like most fish that live in this zone, they have oversized eyes in proportion to their head.

In adult animals the anal fin begins opposite the last fin ray of the dorsal fin, in larvae it is always behind the dorsal fin. An adipose fin may be present or absent. Argyropelecus species have two rows of small luminous organs . The number of vertebrae is 37, that of the gill rake 16 to 18.
