The Arheilger Mühlchen is a natural bathing lake on the eastern edge of Darmstadt-Arheilgen .

Location and history

The Arheilger Mühlchen in Darmstadt-Arheilgen (Auf der Hardt) is located in the area of ​​the Ruthsenbach green corridor . The lake has a water surface of 14,800 m², the average water depth is 2.20 m.

The lake was leased to Müller Vöglin until 1843. Then it went into private ownership. In 1854 it was drained and then used as a meadow. A few years later the former lake was flooded again. Most of the Arheilger Mühlchen grounds, including the bathing lake itself, are still privately owned today.

The natural bathing lake has been used as a public swimming pool since 1924. The swimming pool was threatened with closure in 2012 due to the city's tight financial situation and the expiring lease. In 2015 the Arheilger Mühlchen was placed under monument protection.

Bathing operation

The bathing lake has a non-swimmer area, a water slide, a diving tower with 1m board and 3m board, a competition area with starting blocks and the long lake itself with three buoys.

Admission is free. However, voluntary admission can be donated at the "Mühlchenbox" at the entrance and exit. The association recommends an amount of one euro per visitor (reduced 50 cents). In 2017 just under 54,000 guests visited the Mühlchen, after 50,000 visitors in the previous year.

etymology

Originally the lake was called Unterer Arheilger Teich , Unterer Arheilger Woog and Unterer Woog . The name Arheilger Mühlchen goes back to a formerly neighboring flour mill .

Herons and other water birds can often be seen at the Arheilger Mühlchen pond, which is covered with water lilies . The European pond turtle is also native. There are old trees in the park area.
