features
butterfly
Ariadne ariadne has no gender dimorphism . Males and females show the same drawing elements. The wingspan is 45 to 60 millimeters. All wings have an orange-yellow to orange-brown basic color on the front. Several narrow, tightly wavy dark brown transverse lines run over the fore and hind wings. A very small white spot can be seen on the forewing near the apex , which also shows through to the underside. The fringes are alternately white and dark brown. On the underside of the wings, a curved red-brown cross-banding contrasts with the light brown background.
Caterpillar, pupa
Adult caterpillars are colored black-brown and have heavily branched black thorns on the entire body surface. There are two short, thin, elongated, branched horns on the head. From the third body segment, a broad, light yellow or white back line runs, which is interrupted several times by thin black transverse lines. The doll is designed as a falling doll and has a light brown color. The wavy wing sheaths and a hump protrude conspicuously. There are two short tips on the head.
Similar species
The moths of Ariadne merione differ by slightly weaker wavy dark brown lines on the upper side of the forewing and the darker underside of the hind wing.
distribution and habitat
Ariadne ariadne occurs in India , Indonesia , Bhutan , Myanmar , Thailand , Cambodia , China , Laos , Vietnam , Taiwan and Malaysia as well as in Sri Lanka . Eight subspecies are known in the individual occurrence areas . The species prefers to colonize forest edges and clearings.
Way of life
The moths fly in several generations throughout the year, but mainly during the monsoon season between June and September. Both sexes like to suckle on flowers for food intake, but they only stay for a short time. The caterpillars feed primarily on the leaves of the wonder tree ( Ricinus communis ). Other food plants come from the genus Acalypha , Cnesmone and Tragia, which belong to the milkweed family (Euphorbiaceae) .
