Ariane 2

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ariane 2 is the second model in the Ariane rocket series .

technology

The structure of Ariane 2 is almost the same as that of Ariane 1 . Only the thrust of the first and second stage engines was increased and the fuel combination switched to the hypergolic combination of nitrogen tetroxide / UH 25 . In addition, the third stage was extended and the rocket received a new payload fairing, the tip of which was a double cone. As a result, the height of the rocket has increased to 49 m and the take-off weight to 219 t.

The Ariane 3 is similar to the Ariane 2, except that it had two additional solid fuel boosters.

The payload that can be brought into a geostationary orbit by the Ariane 2 is 2175 kg, 325 kg more than the Ariane 1 .

Starts

There were six starts of the Ariane 2. The first took place on May 31, 1986 (according to local time still May 30), almost two years after the first flight of the Ariane 3. This start was a failure, the remaining five were successful last took place in 1989.

Ariane 2 exclusively launched satellites from the INTELSAT VA series and high-performance television satellites based on the Spacebus 300 satellite platform.

Five Ariane 2 took off from the ELA-1 launch site and one Ariane 2 (like two Ariane 3s) lifted from a particularly high launch platform built for this purpose on the ELA-2 launch site set up for the Ariane 4 in order to avoid it before the arrival of the test the first Ariane 4 and increase the start rate.
