Ariane Sherine
Ariane Sherine (born July 3, 1980 in London ) is a British journalist , author and human rights activist . She achieved worldwide fame through her religion-critical Atheist Bus Campaign .
Life
Sherine writes regularly for The Guardian and has also worked for the Sunday Times and The Independent . She began journalism at the age of 21, reviewing music albums for New Musical Express magazine and soon took second place in a BBC Talent Awards for Series Writers (2002). She subsequently worked as a writer for comedic series on British television, including the BBC series My Family and Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps , and she also worked for the Quiz show Countdown on Channel 4 , in which she 2003 performed himself. She also wrote episodes of various shows on CBBC and CITV , including The Story of Tracy Beaker , The New Worst Witch and Space Pirates , before turning back to journalism in early 2008.

Sherine started the Atheist Bus Campaign in response to an evangelical Christian bus advertisement that referred to a website that prophesied "eternity in the agony of hell" and "burning in a lake of fire" to unbelievers. She was brought up as a Christian; her father is close to Unitarianism , the mother's family to Zoroastrianism and the Parsees ; however, both parents do not practice. In 2009 she was nominated for the Secularist of the Year (The Irwin Prize) awarded by the National Secular Society . Sherine was responsible for the first broadcast of the non-religious counterpart of the BBC's Thought for the Day , which aired on BBC Radio 4 in January 2009.
