Arif Abbasov (ethnographer)

Arif Akim oğlu Abbasov ( Russian : Ариф Аким оглы Аббасов , English transcription Arif Akim oglu Abbasov ; * 22. December 1937 in Nakhchivan City , Nakhichevan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic , Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic , † 21st April 2005 in Baku , Azerbaijan ) was an Azerbaijani Ethnographer .

Life and accomplishments

Arif Abbasov was the son of Major General Akim Abbasov (1911-1992). From 1956 he studied history at the Institute of History of the State University of Azerbaijan and graduated there in 1961. Abbasov then worked at the Moscow Institute of Ethnography and Anthropology of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR . After serving for a time on the Scientific Council of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of the AsSSR , he returned to the Historical Institute in 1978 and began working there as Deputy Director for Scientific Affairs. In 1982 the department for ethno-sociological research in the field of archeology and ethnography of the Historical Institute was established and entrusted to him the management. In 1993, the archeology and ethnography department was spun off as a separate institute and Abbasov was appointed its first director, which he held until his death in 2005.

His main research interests were ethnic groups, interethnic relationships and the influence of ethnic characteristics on economic, social and cultural processes. In 2001 he was elected a corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan for his work .
