Aris Claeszon

Aris Claeszon (verifiably 1616–1633; † probably 1634 in Amsterdam ) was a Dutch sculptor and builder who worked in Amsterdam and Sweden.

Life

The exact life dates of Aris Claeszon are not known. He was the son of the sculptor and Amsterdam master Claes Adriaenszon van Delft and started his apprenticeship there from 1617. The father ran the sculpture workshop together with his brother Pieter Adriaenszon . Aris Claeszon worked at the Stockholm Palace under Kasper Panten in 1622 . His well-known works include the free-standing tomb in the burial chapel of the Swedish court marshal and imperial councilor Gustav Banér (1547-1600) made of alabaster and black marble (1629) in the Uppsala Cathedral and the sandstone tomb for Swedish imperial councilor Svante Banér (1583 –1628) in the village church of Danderyd north of Stockholm (probably 1628).

The sculptural work on the portals of the Ryningska Palatset built by Simon de la Vallée and the Von der Lindeska Huset are attributed to him in Stockholm . In 1631 he returned to Amsterdam in the Netherlands and was accepted as a master in the St. Barbara guild.

His epitaph in the style of the transition period from Renaissance to Baroque for councilor Johann Füchting († 1637), located in Lübeck's Marienkirche , was already signed by Füchting himself during his lifetime through his Amsterdam agent Wessel Becker in 1633 with Pieter Adriaenszon and Aris Claeszon in Amsterdam by means of a notary contract commissioned and manufactured on December 7, 1633. Stylistically it comes close to the tomb for Gustav Banér in Uppsala. It was damaged in the air raid on Lübeck and restored in 1969/70.

Stylistically, the work of Aris Claeszon is influenced by Hendrick de Keyser , in whose workshop his father worked around 1612. After 1633, Aris Claeszon is no longer mentioned in his guild's books.
