Johann and Margareta Füchting

Johann Füchting (born June 16, 1571 in Rietberg ; † May 24, 1637 in Lübeck ) was a Lübeck merchant, councilor and patron .

Life

Like many important Lübeck patricians, Füchting immigrated from Westphalia at a young age in 1587 and, after completing his commercial training in Lübeck, started his own business in Visby on Gotland . In 1604 he returned to Lübeck and became a citizen of the Hanseatic city . He married Margareta von Lengerke , the daughter of the mayor of Kiel, Amelink von Lengerke . The marriage remained childless. He was a member of the Schonenfahrer company and his shipping and trading activities extended to the Baltic Sea region and to England and Spain. In 1628 he was elected to the city council.

Will and Foundation

On his death he decreed that half of his fortune should be donated to a foundation for the benefit of the poor because of the childlessness . The executors of the will set up the Füchtingshof from part of the very substantial foundation assets , a monastery courtyard as a residential monastery in Lübeck's old town, which is still managed today by the Johann Füchting Testament Foundation . The private foundation was one of the few in Lübeck to independently survive the social catastrophes of the 19th century (the French era and its aftermath) and the 20th century (monetary devaluations due to inflation and currency reform ).

Füchtingshof

The Füchtingshof is one of the outstanding Lübeck corridors and courtyards in the Glockengießerstrasse below the Katharinenkirche . It was handed over to its intended use in 1639 and comprises 20 apartments as a residential courtyard for widows of boatmen and merchants. The early baroque residential complex is a listed building and is part of Lübeck's world cultural heritage . On the Glockengießerstraße, on the facade around the courtyard entrance, there is a sandstone portal, which is exceptionally representative for Lübeck standards, at the entrance to the foundation courtyard behind. The foundation inscription above the portal was designed calligraphically by arithmetic master Arnold Möller .

Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau used the Füchtingshof as a backdrop for his film Nosferatu - A Symphony of Horror in two scenes in his Lübeck exterior shots .

epitaph

Füchting epitaph in St. Marien

During his lifetime, Füchting had a stone epitaph for St. Mary's Church made by Aris Claeszon in the Netherlands . The monument in the north aisle is one of the few that survived the fire of 1942, albeit damaged. Today it is one of the essential pieces of equipment in this church and, together with others, gives an idea of the overall impression of this church before the massive effects of war.

memory

Portraits of Johann Füchting and his wife by an unknown hand hang in the richly furnished donor room of the Füchtingshof, which is used by the heads of the foundation. On the epitaph in the Marienkirche there are sculptures of the two as donor figures.
