Armand Bazin de Bezons (born March 30, 1701 in Paris , † May 11, 1778 in Carcassonne ) was Bishop of Carcassonne.

Life

Armand Bazin was the second son of Marshal Jacques de Bazin, marquis de Bezons (1646-1733) and a nephew and godson of Bishop Armand Bazin de Bezons (1654-1721). In due time he received two abbeys in Kommende, Saint-Jouin-de-Marne in 1717 and the Sainte-Marie de Lagrasse abbey in 1721 , which he had renovated and expanded. After studying theology in Paris, he received his doctorate in theology from the Sorbonne University.

Appointed Bishop of Carcassonne in Roussillon on April 1, 1730 , he was consecrated on January 14, 1731 in the Theatine Church in Paris by Bishop Nicolas de Saulx-Tavannes of Châlons. As a supporter of Jansenism , he not only demanded the rejection of the papal bull Unigenitus Dei filius of 1713, but also violently attacked the teaching of the Jesuits . He issued a Gallican breviary and a new missal for his diocese.

The architectural changes initiated by Bishop Bazin can still be seen in the cityscape of Carcassonne today. He promoted the construction of the market halls and in 1764 had two bastions of the fortress, no longer needed after the final incorporation of the province of Roussillon in France, tear down. He had the trenches in front of it filled in and planted with elms. In 1739 he exchanged the land on which the episcopal office stood (the market halls were built on this site) for another. In 1745 he bought the Delrieu house there and had it converted into a bishop's residence (now the prefecture of the Aude department ).

Mgr Bazin presided over his diocese for 48 years. His grave is in the old cemetery in Carcassonne.
