Armatocereus laetus is a species of plant in the genus Armatocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet laetus means 'lush, joyous, blooming'.
description
Armatocereus laetus grows tree-shaped, is heavily branched just above the ground and reaches heights of 4 to 6 meters. A short, massive trunk is formed. The gray-green shoots are columnar and upright. There are four to eight ribs . The six to twelve initially brown thorns turn whitish or greyish with age.
The white flowers are 7 to 8 centimeters long and up to 5 centimeters in diameter. The green fruits are very thorny.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Armatocereus laetus is common in northern Peru and probably in southern Ecuador .
It was first described as Cactus laetus in 1923 by Karl Sigismund Kunth . Arthur William Hill put the species in the genus Armatocereus in 1938 . Nomenclatory synonyms are Cereus laetus (Kunth) DC. and Lemaireocereus laetus (Kunth) Britton & Rose (1919).
The species could be identical to Armatocereus mataranus .
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
