Armatocereus mataranus is a species of plant in the genus Armatocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet mataranus refers to the occurrence of the species at Matara near San Marcos.

description

Armatocereus mataranus grows tree-like, often with strong branches, and reaches heights of 3 to 7 meters. The bluish gray-green shoots are divided into 30 to 50 centimeter long segments with a diameter of 10 to 15 centimeters. There are five to seven distinct ribs that are 4 to 5 centimeters high. The awl thorns are gray and have a darker tip. The three to eight central spines have a length of 1.5 to 6 centimeters. The six to ten radial spines are 3 to 20 millimeters long.

The white flowers are up to 9 inches long. The fruits reach a length of 6 to 8 centimeters.

Distribution and systematics

Armatocereus mataranus is common in the Peruvian regions of Cajamarca and Ancash .

The first description was made in 1966 by Friedrich Ritter , but did not contain any information on the type. These were submitted by Ritter shortly afterwards. The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Armatocereus mataranus subsp. ancashensis (F.Ritter) Ostolaza :
The first description was in 1981 as Armatocereus mataranus var. ancashensis by Friedrich Ritter. Carlos Ostolaza introduced the variety in 1998 as a subspecies to Armatocereus mataranus . The subspecies has more tapered shoot segments. The fruits are less densely thorn. As synonymous with the following variety described applies: Armatocereus mataranus var. Ancashensis F.Ritter (1981).
  • Armatocereus mataranus subsp. mataranus :
The nominate form has hardly any tapered shoot segments. The fruits are densely thorn.

The species is possibly identical to Armatocereus laetus .
