The stingfish ( Minous ) are a genus of stone fish (Synanceiidae). They occur at depths of 10 to 420 meters on sandy and muddy seabeds in the tropical Indo-Pacific .
features
Stingfish grow to a length of 7.5 to 15 cm. Their body is smooth with no spines or skin tags. The lowest rays of their pectoral fins are isolated from the other eleven fin rays and can be used to "run" across the sea floor like a gurnard . Their tips are provided with peculiar "caps". The dorsal fin is supported by 8 to 12 fin spines and 10 to 14 soft rays (with one type 4 spines and 18 soft rays). The anal fin has two fin spines and 7 to 11 soft rays, the pelvic fins one thorn and five soft rays. All soft rays are undivided. The number of vertebrae is 24 to 27. A swim bladder may be present or absent.
