Armenak "Aram" Yaltyrjan (born May 13, 1914 in Krym , Rostov-on-Don Oblast , † December 18, 1999 ibid) was a Soviet wrestler of Armenian descent

Career

Aram Yaltyrjan grew up in Krym and started wrestling there at the age of 16 in 1930. Later he went to Kiev and became a member of the Dynamo Kiev sports club . He was trained there mainly by Alexander Pustinnikow. He devoted himself to both styles, the Greco-Roman and the free.

He was extremely successful in the Soviet Union and was Soviet master in the Greco-Roman style six times from 1938 to 1940 and from 1946 to 1948 and eight times Soviet master in the free style from 1945 to 1952.

During World War II he was a soldier in the Red Army and fought against the Wehrmacht in the Battle of Kiev.

In 1947 the Soviet Union took part in an international FILA championship, the European championship in Prague, for the first time, although it was not yet a member of FILA at the time. It was wrestled there in Greco-Roman style and Aram Jaltyrjan won a silver medal in the lightweight. He defeated u. a. Celal Atik from Turkey and lost in his last fight for the title against Gösta Jönsson-Frändfors from Sweden.

After that, Soviet wrestlers only started again at the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki. Aram Yaltyrjan was back on the Soviet team, but this time started in free style. He lost his first fight in the lightweight against Olle Anderberg from Sweden, then won over Risto Talosela from Finland and Erik Östrand from Denmark, but then lost to Jahanbakht Tofigh from Iran and was eliminated. He took an honorable 4th place.

He then ended his active wrestling career and became a very successful coach. In the course of this activity he formed a. a. Wladimir Sinjawski , Boris Gurewitsch , Juri Gusow and Wladimir Gulutkin became world class wrestlers.

In 1986 he returned to Krym, but also worked there as a trainer.
