Armenian Bartholomites

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Armenian Bartholomites were Armenian Basilian monks who came to Genoa in 1307 , founded a church of St. Bartholomew there and formed a congregation . At first they lived according to the Rule of St. Benedict and wore the white habit of the Dominicans . Pope Clement V allowed them to worship according to the Armenian rite .

They later adopted the Rule of St. Augustine and founded monasteries in several Italian cities . They received from Pope Boniface IX. the privileges of the Dominicans , but these were finally revoked by Innocent X in 1650 .

A settlement of the Bartholomites was in Würzburg , this is documented for the period from 1384 to 1405. At the beginning of the 16th century there are no more traces of the order.

Cherubini, Cerbelloni, and Paul Costa have earned significant reputations as ministers among their members .
