Examples

In principle, only capital letters are used to represent numbers, because the Armenian script did not initially contain any small letters. The numbers Օ (10000) and Ֆ (20000) weren't introduced until the Middle Ages when the corresponding letters were added to the alphabet.

  • Ծ = 50
  • ՃԻ = 100 + 20 = 120
  • ՌՋՀԵ = 1000 + 900 + 70 + 5 = 1975
  • ՍԴ = 2000 + 4 = 2004
  • ՍՄԻԲ = 2000 + 200 + 20 + 2 = 2222

The traditional Armenian calendar begins on July 11, 552. For example, 1935 AD corresponds to the Armenian year 1383 (ՌՅՁԳ) or 1384 (ՌՅՁԴ).

Գ. գլուխ means chapter 3. Գարեգին Բ. (transliterated Garegin B.) means Karegin II.
