Armin Arbeiter (* 1889 in Pola ; † May 2, 1976 ) was an Austrian swimmer , athlete and athletics official.

Live and act

Armin Arbeiter was born in 1889 and devoted his life to sport, especially swimming and athletics. As early as 1910 he took over the athletics section of the still young Grazer AK , to which he had already belonged as an active player, having previously been active at the Graz Academic Gymnastics Club . Subsequently, he expanded the section using methods that were completely new at the time. These included extensive advertising, holding courses for middle school students, increased event activity and advertising meetings. With new training methods in particular, he built the athletics section of the GAK into the strongest Austrian club outside of Vienna by the beginning of the First World War . After Arbeiter returned from military service , he continued to work as an athletics official. From 1938 to 1945 Arbeiter, a National Socialist , headed the GAK all-round club. Due to his past, Arbeiter later fell under the terms of denazification and was classified as “less burdened” on the basis of the National Socialist Act of 1947 and had to vacate his office. Just two years later, he returned to the GAK board as deputy chairman.

To this day he is considered the founder of Styrian athletics. In addition, Arbeiter was a co-founder of the Styrian Sports Organization, or LSO Styria for short, and was one of the major promoters of water sports development in Graz. In the 1920s he was one of the dominant swimmers at the Austrian swimming championships, along with other Grazers such as Mirko von Vrbancic and Alfred Rödiger . Even after the Second World War , Arbeiter tried to establish an organized athletics association. In order to create a non-partisan and independent sports umbrella organization in addition to the politically oriented umbrella organizations ASKÖ and Sportunion , the General Sports Association of Austria , ASVÖ for short , was founded in 1949 . Arbeiter was not only one of the founders of the association, but also acted as its president from 1951 to 1957. Within a very short time, the ASVÖ developed a leading position in Austrian sport and is now one of the three umbrella sports associations in Austria alongside the ASKÖ and the Sportunion.

Known for his work, which was built up during a period of social resentment and official resistance, the worker was honored several times in the course of his life. Among other things, he was an honorary member of the Austrian Athletics Association (ÖLV) and the Styrian Athletics Association (StLV), as well as the first holder of the StLV badge of honor in gold.

In addition to sport, the doctorate in law Armin Arbeiter worked, among other things, in the Association of Upper Styrian Iron and Steel Works and then in the State Trade Association for Styria. He was director of the master health insurance fund for handicrafts for Styria.

On May 2, 1976, Arbeiter died at the age of 87.
