Armorial (heraldic book)

Armorial is (French: armorial , plural: armoniaux ) is an older name for a book of arms .

  • Armorial Wijnbergen . This collection, written in French, was created between 1265 and 1288 and contains 1302 colored coats of arms. A special feature is that the names of the coat of arms bearers are noted above the coats of arms . The assignment is based on the similarities of the coats of arms. The original is owned by the Koninklijk Nederlandsch Genootschap voor Geslacht- en Wapenkunde (KNGGW) in The Hague.
  • Armorial de l'ordre du Croissant . The manuscript of the register of arms of the members of the Order of the Argonauts , newly established by René I of Anjou in 1448 , is in the National Library in Paris.
  • Armorial d'Assignies . It was created around 1500 and shows the coats of arms of 31 knights from Flanders , Hainaut , Artois and Cambresis . In 1842 it was published by Arthur Dinaux in the journal Archives historiques et littéraires du Nord de la France et du Midi de la Belgique .
  • Armorial General de France . This state book of coat of arms of Bourbon France was created by the royal genealogist Charles-René d'Hozier from 1696 on the basis of an edict of King Louis XIV based on preliminary work since 1615 . Since all coats of arms were obliged to be registered, it contains all French families with coats of arms and 125,807 coats of arms. The 35 volumes of the manuscript are organized according to the 25 historical provinces of France.
  • Armorial général by Johannes Baptista Rietstap . The first edition from 1861 contains around 50,000 coats of arms, the second edition, published in two volumes in Gouda in 1884 and 1887 , offers 110,000 coats of arms.
