An Armored Multi Purpose Vehicle (short: AMPV ) is a lightly armored 4 × 4 vehicle that was developed as a joint venture between the German companies Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles (RMMV) and Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) in the late 2000s has been. It meets the requirements of GFF class 2 .

Development history

In the 2000s, Rheinmetall and KMW decided on a joint venture to develop a protected AMPV family for the Bundeswehr's GFF procurement program. The vehicle is designed to offer key capabilities such as high mobility, combat efficiency and better survivability with a single platform. The conception and design of the vehicle was based on the Bundeswehr's experience in missions abroad , especially in Afghanistan . In February 2011 four AMPV-2 prototypes were produced for company trials. The Bundeswehr also tested the vehicle, but the armed forces of Poland are considered a possible export customer .

Vehicle variants

The AMPV vehicle family will comprise two series - a more agile AMPV 1 is the smaller of the two and is intended as a well-protected connection vehicle. A higher level of protection and a higher payload are the main features of the larger AMPV 2 . The variants AMPV 1 and AMPV 2 are both extremely compact and differ only slightly in height, length and wheelbase. The entire family of vehicles will be based on standardized design principles and technologies. Both series also have a patrol vehicle configuration, a commercial vehicle version with an unprotected underbody in the rear area and an equipment carrier with a safety cell reaching to the rear of the vehicle. A special patrol version of the AMPV1 is also planned, which can be loaded into the CH53 transport helicopter . Nevertheless, all vehicles in the AMPV family largely consist of identical assemblies.

Armament

On the roof of the AMPV is the remotely controllable weapon station FLW from KMW, either in the version FLW 100 or FLW 200. Specifically, the armament here comprises 12.7 mm or 7.62 mm machine guns or a 40 mm machine grenade launcher .
