Arne Ekeland (born August 14, 1908 in Bøn / Eidsvoll , Viken , Norway ; † February 28, 1994 ) was one of the most important Norwegian painters of the 20th century.

His most famous works include “Våren”, “Perlebekken”, “Angst” and “Frihetens søstre” (Sisters of Freedom), which hangs in the storting . He was a political painter and a member of the Norwegian Communist Party for most of his life . Many of his pictures are strongly influenced by his political views, pacifism, humanism and the beauty that he saw in nature and family around him. He was influenced by Cubism and Surrealism , but also orientated himself on the formal language of Renaissance painting , but his style changed continuously.

He was convinced that art belongs in the public space and not in the private sphere. He was particularly disappointed that his design for the design of the Oslo City Hall received an award in 1936, but was not taken into account - presumably for political reasons.

His studio in Bøn / Eidsvoll can be visited.
