Arno Kleffel

Arno Kleffel (born September 4, 1840 in Pößneck , Thuringia , † July 15, 1913 in Nikolassee near Berlin) was a German conductor and composer.

Life

Arno Kleffel studied at the Leipzig Conservatory and privately with Moritz Hauptmann. From 1863–1867 Kleffel was conductor of the Musical Society in Riga, from 1868 theater bandmaster in Cologne, Amsterdam, Görlitz, Breslau, Stettin and others, from 1873–1880 he worked at the Friedrich-Wilhelmstädtisches Theater in Berlin, then in Augsburg and Magdeburg. From 1892–1894 he worked in Berlin as a theory and piano teacher at the Stern Conservatory and as a music critic. From 1884 to 1892 and from 1894 to 1904 he was first Kapellmeister at the Stadttheater in Cologne, where he directed the Gürzenich concerts alongside Franz Wüllner (1832–1902); there he also received the title of royal professor. From 1904 he worked at the Stern Conservatory as a professor of composition, as head of the Kapellmeisterschule and as head of the Stern choir.

Works

Kleffel wrote a. a. Vocal music, music for piano (two and four hands) and some works for orchestra. A comprehensive catalog of the composer's works has been published by Franz Pazdirek. This very extensive list is available online. Numerous works by Kleffel have been recorded on CD by Edition Romana Hamburg (Gerhard Helzel).
