Arnold Jacob Heinrich "Arno" Schiffers (* 1901 in Eilendorf near Aachen , † October 25, 1964 in Munich ) was a German painter , graphic artist and architect .

Life

At his father's request, Schiffers completed an apprenticeship at Dresdner Bank , followed by a year at the Société Anonyme des Bibliothèques des Gares in Aachen, where he worked as an interpreter. In 1932 he completed a degree in architecture and worked as an architect until 1939. After the Second World War , which he went through as a soldier from beginning to end , he no longer wanted to work as an architect in view of the "styleless reconstruction," as he writes. From then on he lived as a freelance artist , now based in Munich- Schwabing .

"Nobody knew where he came from ... In 1948 a pale person appeared in the post-war jungle of Schwabing ..." writes his companion, the Schwabing painter and writer Anton Sailer, about Arno Schiffers.

Schiffers was an advocate of cubism. In his opinion, “the possibilities of Cubism were by no means exhausted.” As part of the “ Neue Gruppe ” artists' association, Schiffers regularly took part in exhibitions in the Munich “Galerie Malura” (which was launched by the artist Oswald Malura ) and in House of Art . However, Schiffers mistrusted the general art scene throughout his life.

In 1962, two years before his death, Schiffers was honored with the Schwabing Art Prize of the City of Munich.

The Schwabing painter Ludwig Orny writes about Schiffers "I was stunned by Schiffer's talent ... The little that was seen of his work was enough to recognize its importance."

Anton Sailer writes in his article: "His circle of friends was shocked by the fate of an artist who was given the talent for the decisive breakthrough, but not the necessary ounce of luck."

family

Arno Schiffers was the oldest brother of the artists Oswald Schiffers (painter and graphic artist), Paul Egon Schiffers (sculptor) and Anselm Schiffers (composer and church musician). He was married to the carpet weaver Minna Riezler . They didn't have any children.
