Oswald Malura
Oswald Malura (born October 9, 1906 in Boleslau ; † June 29, 2003 in Munich ) was a German painter .
biography
After an apprenticeship with a decorative painter in Ratibor , Upper Silesia , Oswald Malura studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from 1926 , where he became a master student after two years. After completing his studies, he received the Mons travel grant for gifted academy students, which enabled him to stay in India and Ceylon . During the trip he met Mahatma Gandhi and Nobel Prize winner Rabindranath Thakur . He described the experiences of this trip in the book "As a painter through India" published in 1949. In the early 1950s he made a trip to South America , during which he also circumnavigated the South American continent.
The focus of his work was the Schwabing artists' quarter in Munich , where he opened the “Galerie Malura” in Leopoldstrasse after the Second World War, where exhibitions, lectures and discussions were held on a monthly basis. In addition to his artistic work and gallery activity, Malura also ran a "state-approved painting and drawing school". At the end of the 1950s, Malura built the “Atelier am Hang” in Oberdießen near Landsberg am Lech. From 1965 to 1977, the artist meetings initiated by Peter Paul Althaus took place in his Schwabing apartment at Kaulbachstrasse 75 under the title “Citizens' Meetings of the Dream City” . In 1977 Malura acquired an old farmhouse in Oberdießen, which he renovated and redesigned as a “house of encounters” into a “cultural meeting point for like-minded people in spirit”. The Malura Museum has existed in this house in Oberdießen, Mühlweg 2, since 1993. It is run by the Oswald Malura Art Foundation, founded in 2003 and headed by Malura's son Andrew Malura.
Oswald Malura's extensive and varied work includes portraits, still lifes , abstract pictures and collages . The colorful landscapes were mostly created during his study trips to India, Ceylon and South America.
