Scene rendered with Arnold

Arnold is a computer program for calculating ( rendering ) three-dimensional, computer-generated scenes. Developed in Spain by Marcos Fajardo and his company Solid Angle , Arnold is one of the most widely used rendering programs in computer graphics worldwide in 2017. On January 4, 2017, Fajardo received an "Oscar" from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for his work on Arnold. In 2016 Autodesk took over the company and then implemented Arnold in its 3D programs such as Maya .

Technology and history

Marcos Fajardo, 2013

Macos Fajardo attended the Siggraph conference for computer graphics in 1997 and was inspired by several lectures on rendering technologies, especially diffuse ray tracing , to develop his own. It was more important then than later to generate a high degree of photorealism with the lowest possible computing resources . Arnold uses stochastic methods, especially Monte Carlo, to evaluate the course of rays in a virtual scene . As a result, scenes rendered with Arnold achieve a significantly more homogeneous light and softer shadows than with classic ray tracing technologies. With Arnold's generic light dome, a large sphere that wraps around the entire 3D scene, images are created that are reminiscent of much more complex global illumination methods. One of Arnold's specialties is interactive rendering (IPR) in lower resolution. The program shows the 3D scene in raw form and reacts relatively quickly to every input from the 3D graphic artist, for example to changes in the light position or the geometry. The program consists of around 200,000 lines of C ++ code.

The name Arnold came up on a whim: Fajardo was in the cinema with colleagues and was watching a film with Arnold Schwarzenegger .

Individual evidence

  1. The blue cone is semi-transparent, slightly reflective. The whole scene contains only two lights: an intense one from the front and a global one (light dome).
