Arnold Jan d'Ailly (born June 22, 1902 in Franeker , Friesland province ; † November 24, 1967 in Amsterdam ) was a Dutch politician ( Partij van de Arbeid (PvdA)) and mayor of Amsterdam.

Life

D'Ailly was appointed mayor of Amsterdam in October 1946 as the successor to Feike de Boer (1892-1976). He was known for his wanderlust and was therefore called the flying mayor ( de vgende burgemeester ). In 1956 he had to leave office due to a marriage affair. He was succeeded as mayor by Gijs van Hall (1904–1977). In January 1957, d'Ailly became director of the National Commercial Bank in Amsterdam.

In 1959, d'Ailly married the artist and patron Gisèle van Waterschoot van der Gracht (1912–2013), who was honored as Righteous Among the Nations in Yad Vashem .
