He came from the noble family von Rotberg , who were wealthy in the area around Basel and provided several Basel mayors. Arnold was the son of the Basel Mayor Hans Ludemann von Rotberg and Ursula von Andlau . His brother Bernhard was mayor of Basel from 1449 to 1453. He studied in 1428/29 in Heidelberg , where he acquired the degree of Licentiatus artium in 1431. In 1439 he studied at the University of Bologna and in 1440 was awarded a Dr. decr. PhD .

Arnold was canon in Basel in 1439 ; he has been attested as cathedral curator since 1447 . He became dean of the cathedral in 1450 . From 1440 he belonged to the General Congregation of the Basel Council . After the death of Friedrich zu Rhein, he was elected Bishop of Basel on January 29, 1451. Confirmation by the Pope took place on March 22nd, and on June 13th he received episcopal ordination in Basel. King Friedrich III. awarded him the Regalia in the same year .

Due to Arnold's family relationships with the Basel patriciate , there were no major disputes with the city, which was striving for independence, during his tenure. In 1451 the bishop guaranteed the nomination of mayor and council, the court order of 1457 restricted the rights of the bishop. In contrast to his predecessor, Arnold also took care of religious matters. So he reformed the Canon Monastery of St. Leonhard . After his death he was buried in the Basel Minster .
