Arnoldus Vesaliensis

Arnoldus Vesaliensis (actually Arnold Haldrein ; also Arnold von Wesel or Haldernius ; * around 1484 in Wesel ; † October 30, 1534 in Cologne ) was a German humanist .

Life

Arnoldus came from Wesel and was accordingly nicknamed Vesaliensis or von Wesel . He attended the Laurentianum grammar school in Cologne and entered the artistic faculty of the old Cologne university on October 8, 1516 . He quickly made a name for himself there because of his linguistic and poetic skills. Although his scientific work was more in the philological direction, he obtained the degree of doctor of theology . Later worked as a lecturer in Cologne.

Arnoldus attended the Diet of Augsburg in 1530 . He became canon at Cologne Cathedral in 1531 . His writings defend Catholic worship of saints and relics against Protestant criticism.
