Arnoul Greban

Arnoul Gréban (* 15th century in Le Mans ; † 1485 in Florence ) was a French author, theologian, singer, organist and dramaturge.

life and work

Gréban was a theologian at the Sorbonne and from 1440 to 1453 organist at the Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral . From 1455 to 1473 he was in the service of Charles IV (Maine) , then in Florence of Lorenzo il Magnifico . Gréban was the author of an important mystery play , a genre in which he was preceded by Eustache Marcadé and followed by his son-in-law Jean Michel . His passion play Mystère de la Passion of 35,000 verses for 224 actors, commissioned by René I (Anjou) , the older brother of Charles IV, was first performed in 1556 and lasted until 1507.
