Life

Arnulf is said to have accompanied Otto II to Italy in 983 . In 988 he succeeded his father. However, this turned out to be difficult at times. He was not only one of the most powerful feudal takers of the Ottonian house in the area between the Rhine and Scheldt estuaries, but also held a fiefdom of the French crown and was also of great importance as the port and Vikgrave of Ghent. Because he, like his father, was also a supporter of the Ottonians , a conflict with Hugo Capet arose . This devastated Arnulf's territory and did not enfeoff him, but his son Theodoric III. with the French possessions. In the middle of May 988, Otto III. and Empress Theophanu in the area contested between Hugo Capet and Karl von Niederlothringen . The greats of the region also came to the Empress's court camp. These were, in particular, Margrave Gottfried von Verdun and Arnulf of Holland, West Frisia and Ghent. There, after the death of his father by Hugo Capet, Arnulf's feudal relationships were probably clarified. He owned a large allod and tried to expand his holdings. He also made rich donations to Egmond Abbey . Due to the family relationship between his wife and Empress Theophanu, the abbey came into possession of numerous Greek and Latin scripts. In his day there was heavy fighting with the Frisians. He fell in a battle at Winkel against the Frisians.
