Location of the Arras barracks in Bavaria

The Arras barracks was an artillery - barracks of the Wehrmacht in the Augsburg district Kriegshaber that after the Battle of Arras in the First World War was named.

history

The Arras barracks was built in the mid-1930s by the Wehrmacht on an area that had been used as a large parade ground since 1806. It formed the southern part of a barracks complex, which also included the tank destroyer and Somme barracks . In 1936/37 the area was supplemented by an officers' mess shared by all three barracks .

The entire barracks complex remained virtually undamaged in World War II and was taken over by the US Army immediately after the war . Initially, some buildings in the Arras barracks were used as prisoner-of-war camps , and later as a hospital for German soldiers who had returned from captivity. In April 1947, with the approval of the military government , these buildings were converted into the West Hospital and finally became the property of the City of Augsburg in 1970. In addition, until 1951, three German companies had their headquarters in the Arras barracks.

In 1953, the US Army merged the three barracks, which had been independently run until then, to form the Reese Barracks . The appointment was made in honor of James W. Reese , a carrier of the Medal of Honor , which in August 1943 in Sicily , the conquest of enemy support point had significantly contributed lead and was there much. The Reese barracks was used by the US Army until 1993/94.

Todays use

The western hospital was shut down in 1982 with the opening of the Augsburg Central Hospital . The former officers' mess of the three barracks is now used as the Abraxas cultural center for cultural events, while the buildings of the former Arras barracks are partially used for the "West Culture Park". In the long term, the entire Reese barracks site will be integrated into the Kriegshaber district in an urban development process.
