Location of the Somme barracks in Bavaria |
The Somme barracks in the Augsburg district of Kriegshaber was built by the Wehrmacht in 1934 and 1935 and housed the 27th Artillery Regiment . The name was derived from its location on the Somme road again after the Battle of the Somme in World War I was named.
Since the barracks remained largely undamaged during World War II , around 2,000 Russian displaced persons were accommodated here in the first months after the end of the war . On July 15, 1946, the US Army officially took over the barracks, but initially used them primarily as accommodation and less for military purposes. Together with the Arras and Panzerjäger barracks , it was integrated into the complex of the American Reese barracks .
The former officers' mess of the Somme barracks is now used as the Abraxas Culture House for cultural events, and other buildings are part of the "West Culture Park".
