West Hospital Augsburg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The West Hospital Augsburg was a hospital in the Augsburg district of Kriegshaber .

history

The main hospital in Jakobervorstadt , which opened in 1859, was for a long time the only municipal hospital in Augsburg. As early as the beginning of the 20th century , its capacities were far from being sufficient, so that the city council planned to build a new hospital on the western edge of the city center. A lack of funding and the two world wars ensured that the planning phase was never abandoned.

At the end of the Second World War , the US Army took over all of Augsburg's barracks, including the Arras barracks . Some of the buildings in these barracks were initially used as a prisoner-of-war camp and later as a hospital for German soldiers who had returned from captivity. The Augsburg city council saw this as an opportunity to overcome capacity problems in health care and, with the approval of the military government, converted the hospital into the western hospital in April 1947 . The building finally became the property of the city of Augsburg in 1970, and on January 1, 1971 the hospital was integrated into the Augsburg Hospital Association . The rheumatologist Hanns Kaiser (1921–2012) was the head physician of the West Hospital for many years .

As early as July 1958, the Augsburg city council had drafted the plan to build a new central hospital, which was opened in April 1982 after a long planning and construction phase. As a result, all departments of the West Hospital moved to the new Central Hospital , and the hospital was closed in September 1982.

Departments

Shortly before its closure, the West Hospital had 500 beds in five clinics:

In the 1980s, the former barracks crew buildings were converted into a residential complex, which is managed by the municipal housing association (WBG). The adjacent, identical buildings of the former Reese barracks were demolished. As part of the urban development, a residential area with parks and a local supply center, the "Reese Park", is being created on the site. The long-term goal is the seamless integration of the areas into the Kriegshaber district.
