The old main hospital is located in the Jakobervorstadt of Augsburg . It was built between 1856 and 1859 in the Maximilian style. With the opening of the clinic in 1982, the main hospital was closed. After various temporary uses, the Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy of St. Vinzenz von Paul bought the building in 2008 and set up a health center in it after a construction phase lasting several years.

The historic bare brick building is registered as a monument in the Bavarian list of monuments.

history

Built 1856-1859

The building was built on the site of the breeding and work house, which was converted into a local hospital in 1811. Just a few decades later, a new building was required because the old building no longer met the hygienic and structural requirements. The new building was based on an elevation by Johann Georg Gollwitzer from 1854 and was then built between 1856 and 1859 under the direction of city building officer Franz Joseph Kollmann . The surrounding gardens came from Ferdinand Greinwald .

The new building was made possible, among other things, by several foundations and donations. A particularly large donation was made by Johann Georg Henle. The donation was subject to the condition that the Catholic patients were cared for by the Sisters of Charity . Another donation by Ferdinand Benedikt Schaezler made it possible for Protestant patients to be looked after by deaconesses . By regulation, a ratio of 70% room capacity for Catholic patients versus 30% for Protestant patients was set. The denominational separation was continued in the station until 1945.

The central building housed the administration, a pharmacy as well as operating and delivery rooms. To the east of the central building was the Catholic wing, to the west the Protestant wing. Each of these wings even had its own chapel. Originally with up to 400 beds, it was supposed to improve the hygienic and health conditions of the industrial city, which was growing rapidly at that time. Most of the rooms were equipped with gas lighting and hot water heating.

1910-1951

Extensive modernization measures, such as electrification or the installation of new medical equipment, took place between 1910 and 1914. A year later the building also received passenger elevators.

In 1936 the number of beds was increased to 750 by an extension in the middle wing. The seizure of power by the National Socialists also had an impact on nursing in the main hospital. The contract with the deaconesses was canceled and so-called “brown sisters” were deployed. At the same time one began to carry out compulsory sterilization . The construction of air raid shelter with emergency surgery was carried out in 1941. The bombing of Augsburg in 1944 the eastern part of the main hospital was partially destroyed and then built from 1946 to 1951 with a slightly altered facade again.

1951 until closing in 1982

The city of Augsburg initially planned to expand the hospital in the 1950s. In 1959, however, the city council decided to build a new building on Kobelfeld on the north-western outskirts of the city, which should also replace the other city hospitals (the central clinic , now Augsburg University Clinic ). Between 1967 and 1969 construction and renovation measures were carried out again. Until its closure in 1982, the main hospital had around 500 beds.

Interim uses

In the following years, various municipal offices, theater groups, doctors' offices and social institutions used the building. These include, for example, the state institute for the training of specialist teachers, a Montessori kindergarten, the faculty for design at the Augsburg University of Applied Sciences (until 2007) and the city traffic authority (until 2009).

Due to high maintenance and renovation costs, the city of Augsburg began looking for a buyer or investor for the listed property in 2007. However, the search turned out to be difficult due to its size and dilapidation. Finally, the owner of the neighboring Vincentinum Clinic , the Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy of Saint Vincent de Paul, acquired the building from the city of Augsburg in 2008. From 2010 to 2012, the new owner carried out extensive renovations inside the historic main building. At the same time, the facade was extensively renovated.

The eastern section, which is not a listed building, was then demolished. At the same place, a completely new building planned by Wulf Architekten from Stuttgart for a health center with doctor's offices, a pharmacy and operating rooms for outpatient interventions was built. The state institute for the training of specialist teachers and the Montessori kindergarten are still located in the historic main building.

Former nurses' home (now a youth hostel)

South of the main hospital, on the other side of Hensiusstraße, the nurses' home of the hospital administration association has been located since 1967; today it is the Augsburg youth hostel . The Vincentinum is to the east of the building and the St. Maximilian Church to the southeast .

To the north of the main hospital, separated from it by the street “Pulvergäßchen”, is the central heating plant. The Stadtbach flows under the west wing of the main hospital.

In 1993, an innovative spiral car park with a depth of 30 meters was built in the courtyard of the old main hospital. However, due to technical problems and insufficient capacity utilization, the plant was finally closed in 2000. When the renovation work began on the old main hospital, the parking garage was demolished.
